Memory is measured in bytes. 1 byte = 1 letter in MS word 1 Kilobyte (Kb) = 1000 bytes 1 Megabyte (Mb) = 1000 Kb 1 Gigabyte (Gb) = 1000 Mb 1 terabyte (Tb) = 1000 Gb
ROM (Read Only Memory) When a computer is made basic operating instructions are put on a ROM chip. These control how the computer turns on. They can be read but not changed and are available even after the computer is turned off.
RAM (Random Access Memory) The RAM chip inside the computer holds its operating instructions and allows programs to work e.g. MS Word. The more RAM a computer has, the faster the programs can be used. PCs today come with 512 Mb or 1Gb of RAM. When you work with big files e.g. editing pictures or films you need a lot of RAM. All data held in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off.
Storing data internally Data is stored on the hard drive. Hard drives can be 1-1000Gb large.

Components of a computer system
What is hardware and give two examples? (p8)
Hardware is the name given to the physical parts of a computer, the parts of the computer you can touch. For example, printers and scanners.
What is software and give two examples? (p8)
Software is the name given to the computer programs that tell the hardware how to work. For example, a word-processed letter or a spreadsheet.
List the 5 categories of hardware.
Central processing unit (CPU), memory, storage devices, input devices and output devices.
What is the main purpose of
An operating system – give an example- to control the hardware and how all the other software works, for example Windows; made by the Microsoft Corporation.
Application software – give an example(p9)- to instruct a computer to carry out a specific task. It's the application software that we use whenever we need help with a task while using the computer. For example, Microsoft Word as it would be chosen as a word-processing application.
What does CPU stand for?
Central Processing Unit
What is the function of a CPU and what is the most common brand of processor?
The function of the CPU is to control how a computer works as it's the "brain" of the computer. The most common brand of processor is Intel.
What is the main piece hardware used to store data internally?
The hard disk.
What does ROM do?
ROM provides the data necessary to store memory so it's only readable, but not re-writable.
If data is held in RAM, why is it important to save your work?
Because RAM only saves data temporarly, this is know as being volatile; which means that data is only saved whilst the computer is being used.
Write a brief definition of input and output devices and give one example of each.
Input device –A device which is used to get data into the computer, such as a scanner. Output device –A devide which is used to get processed data out of the computer, such as a printer.
To back up data means to store data in another place than the hard drive so that you have an emergency copy of your data. Give three examples of devices used for secondary/ backing storage.
1.Magnetic tape 2.Hard disk 3.Optical storage (CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs)
Windows has a ‘Graphical User Interface’ (GUI), what is a GUI? and explain the difference between a GUI and a command line interface.
GUI is basically an interface that takes advantage of the capabilities of the computer to use images etc. to make programs easier to use through visual language. It's different to CLI in the sense that this previous one requires technical language which is entered as a command in a specific line, the system responds to this, the user types in another command and so on.
